The following diagnosis applies
to both power brakes and standard brakes unless otherwise specified.
- Hard Pedal Feel May Be
Caused By:
- Power brake vacuum failure
due to:
- Faulty vacuum check valve
or seal.
- Collapsed vacuum hose
to manifold.
- Plugged or loose vacuum
hose or fitting.
- Leaks in front or rear
housing.
- Bound up pedal mechanism.
- Grease on brake drum or
linings.
- Power brake unit trouble
due to:
- Jammed air valve.
- Vacuum leak past the vacuum
diaphragm.
- Leak in vacuum cylinder.
- Restricted air filter.
- Malfunctioning air valve.
- Leaking past floating
or air valve.
- "Grabby" or
Severe Brakes Caused By:
- Grease or brake fluid
on linings.
- Scored drums.
- Burned linings.
- Power brake unit trouble
due to:
- Sticking air valve.
- Binding master cylinder
piston.
- Pedal Goes to Floor (or
almost to floor) Caused By:
- Self-adjuster not operating.
- Air in hydraulic system.
- Hydraulic leak in line
or at wheel cylinders.
- Low fluid level in master
cylinder reservoir.
- Leak at primary cup.
- Sand hole or crack in
master
cylinder.
- Worn brake linings.
- Brake Lock-Up Caused By:
- Restricted compensator
port.
- Incorrect push-rod adjustment
(Power).
- Incorrect pedal
free travel (Standard).
- Faulty hydraulic check
valve.
- Sticking air valve.
- Excessive Lining Wear
Rear Brakes
- Parking
brake improperly
adjusted.
