Chrysler de Mexico

Chrysler began manufacturing vehicles in Mexico in 1939 and to this day, remains a major component of Mexico's automobile industry. Prior to the early 1960's, Chrysler products assembled in Mexico were almost identical to the same models being produced in the USA. Shifts in the industrial policies of Mexico during the 1960's led to a Chrysler production program that was less dependent on US manufacturing and thus, over the years, vehicles produced in Mexico made use of subtle design changes as well as drivetrain differences that we did not see here in the United States. These pages are devoted to describing Chryslers de Mexico in image as well as text with an emphasis on describing the differences between Mexican and US models.

Unlike some other Latin American production programs, like those of Argentina and Brasil, Mexico's industrial policies allowed for body panels and unibody components to be produced in the USA and imported to Mexico. For this reason, yearly model changes in the USA were also found in Mexico (this was not the case in other latin american countries, like Brasil and Argentina, where local content restrictions were very strict). However, as far back as 1965, the remaining components, such as radiators, engines, transmissions, and rearends, was nearly 100% of domestic (Mexican) product.
