Mopar Documentation: Example Tags

1960-1962: examples needed

I'm in need of good clear pictures of example 1960,1961, and 1962 fender tags!

1963: Los Angeles built Belvedere

The example used for 1963 is a fender tag I found on an auction website. The car was originally a V8 Belvedere two door Hardtop (Body code 321) with a base 318 Poly. The car has been redone into a gorgegous example of a Max Wedge clone. Two very interesting points of interest regarding this tag are, (1) it is a Los Angeles built car and (2) it is a two tone paint "FG2" code car. Thats "Light Green" roof and "Light Green Metallic" body coupled with a green interior (trim code 322)! My kind of car!

1964:

This fender tag came from an eBay auctioned Lynch Road built Fury two door hardtop (vin code 33412631xx with body code 332). The engine code should be under the "A" and the absence of any number in that position indicates the car came with the stardard engine for a "332" which was a 318cid Poly V8. The "04" on the top line is the gate sequence number and the "104" is the base sequence number. Codes under the G,N,R, and X are undocumented (thats more than half the options!). There are two colors identified on the tag. The roof and body color "Sandlewood Metallic" are indicated with the "HH", the interior trim color is "Cordovan" (a shade of brown) as indicated with the "U" in "H4U" under "TRM", and the "W" after the "HH" indicates an exterior accent color of "white" for the Fury trim.

This is a 1964 Los Angeles built V8 Belvedere (3245171304). Unique to LA tags is the letter under the "P" (In this case, it happens to be "P") which indicates the interior paint color. For this particular car it is "Red". the "5" under the "A" is for a 345 Torqueflite Automatic. The "5" under the "L" is for 385 Heater with defroster. Car is equipped with a standard 318-2bbl engine as there is no code under the "C". Radio codes appear under the "H". This was equipped with a Radio however, it might have been ordered as a radio delete car. It was not uncommon for dealerships to install radios in radio delete cars to satisfy a buyer's needs. The "2" under the "0" on the top line might indicate a 512 outside manual mirror, but those top line codes are completely unknown.

1965: Stephan Pleyer's Chrysler New Yorker Station Wagon

The example tag for 1965 comes all the way from Switzerland with from Stephan Pleyer's Chrysler New Yorker Town and Country nine passenger Station Wagon (Body code C77). Besides being an option loaded beautiful example of such a fine station wagon, The car is in remarkably great condition. It's fender tag is very unique with its "99" Special Order Engine and "999" prefixed Shipping Order Number. The NN1 Silver with Red Interior is not common either. The Engine is a 340hp 413cid 4bbl V8 (easiest way to tell the difference between a 365hp and 340hp 413 is a dual point vs. single point distributor). The 340hp 413 engine was available as a regular option available with 1965 Chryslers, as was the 360hp 413 engine which was standard in 300-L's and available in police cars. Its possible that the "99" engine was one or the other of these engines fitted with a station wagon exhaust system (wagons were generally not fitted with a standard dual exhaust, requiring the pipes exit to the sides). Also note the "99" at the top of the fender tag near the lefthand screw. This was further indication of the car being a special order.

1966 Two Tone Satellite

Except for the two tone paint scheme, this seems like a fairly generic Satellite. It came with a 230hp Poly 318cid 2bbl V8 ("41" under "AB") and a Torqueflite automatic transmission ("5" under "C"). Further inspection shows no radio option under the "R", and no heater option under the "S". The lack of a radio option shows it was radio delete car, but the lack of a heater option on a Premium B-body (Coronet 500,Satellite) indicates it was a 415 heat with defrost car. The "ED2" indicates a "E" code "Dark Blue Metallic" roof and a "D" code "Light Blue Metallic" body hue.

1967 Coronet R/T

This is a very typical R/T (or GTX) tag for 1967. "83" indicates 375hp 440cid V8 and the "5" next to it indicates a 395 Torqueflite Automatic. The "64" under the "ab" is two options "486" and "564" , which are console and buckets seats. This "64" will appear on nearly every 1966-1967 Premium level Dodge or Plymouth B-body (Coronet 500, R/T, Satellite, GTX) and maybe A-bodies (though not all, 1967 Dart GTs and Barracudas often came with a column shift torqueflite and no console). Also of note is the absence of 408 Sure-Grip under "AX" which indicated a open diff "peg-leg" for this R/T (fairly common).

1968 Dart GT Convertible

This tag represents a rather ordinary 1968 Dart GT convertible (body code LP27). The engine code of "31" and transmission code of "5" indicates a 180hp 273cid 2bbl V8 with an automatic. The "4" under the "b" indicates "564" buckets seats, but the lack of a "6" under the "a" tell sus this was a column shift non-console car (the possibility of which was discussed in the 1967 example tag description). The "1" under the "E" represents the famous "361 code - White Hat Special" package that included fender mounted turn signals ("7" under the "h" code "517"), white wall tires (tire code "23"), wheel covers, wheel lip mouldings ("8" under the "7" on the moulding line "12345678" indicates "548"), bumper guards, and a remote control outside mirror. To editorize a bit, the "White Hat Special" had to be one of the most pointless and meaningless sales promotions that Dodge used for several years in the 1960s, what about a man with a white cowboy hat would make anyone want to buy a car? Perhaps its just part of the overall creativity that makes the 1960s cars in general so endearing and popular nearly fifty years later.
